Moonlight, not daylight!

When you’ve been doing a job for as long as I have, you can’t help but pick up valuable tips along the way from your peers. I’ve learned so much from fellow DJs; music mixing tips, mic presentation techniques and health & safety measures to name a few, but I also try to impart knowledge of my own to colleagues along the way. My latest concern in the mobile DJ world is the overuse of lighting… Since the advent of LED lighting, mobile disco lightshows have become cheaper, lighter (not meant as a pun!) and 1000% more energy efficient. They

We Got Soul! 10 Top Anthems For Your Dancefloor

If there’s one thing guaranteed to put smiles on faces and rhythm in feet, it’s Soul music!  I make no secret of the fact that soul music, in all its’ forms, is my passion. I grew up listening to classic Motown such as Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations. Curiosity then took me onto Stax & Atlantic stuff, spending long hours with James Brown, Otis Redding and Aretha on constant rotation. Delve deeper and you discover Northern Soul, Psychedelic Funk and US Garage. Then of course there’s disco! And my true love of this music continues today,

The Common Misconceptions About Mobile DJs!

I have been a professional DJ for a long time…over thirty years, in fact.  During the mid-2000s, I was taking so many bookings that I made the bold decision to quit my steady day job and go headfirst into the world of mobile DJing full time. And I’m still here. Despite Covid and despite competition for business increasing tenfold from amateurs with a laptop, my business is still alive and kicking! In all that time, I have heard many comical (and sometimes insulting!) observations about mobile DJs…and I’d like to share a few here, to hopefully give you a laugh

Come Hell Or High Water – The Show Goes On in Storm Eunice!

“Bit of a stiff breeze today, eh?” We all knew it was coming…weather warnings on the TV and radio for most of the preceding week…but like typical Brits, we totally underestimated the power of Storm Eunice, and boy oh boy we got a shocker of a weather front! On Friday morning, I was informed by the venue (Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk, a beautiful manor house hotel) that power was out for the whole hotel, but a generator had already been moved in to keep both the kitchens and the entertainment going seamlessly from noon until the party finished at 1.00am.

My Favourite 5 Small Wedding Venues For Intimate Receptions

Here’s a question I get asked pretty frequently…”We don’t have a large family or huge group of friends, so could you recommend a venue for a small wedding reception please?” From my experiences around Essex and the South East, here are my favourite function suites for smaller audiences. Please bear in mind that my opinions are based on the ‘party-worthiness’ of the function suites, i.e. dance floor location, size, proximity to the bar area, etc: The Compasses at Pattiswick  – This place is a little gem! Situated near Braintree but located quite remotely off the A120, this characterful exclusive venue

Ten Top Wedding Reception Tips

I’m quietly confident that, after 30 years and almost 1000 wedding receptions later, I’m in a pretty good position to hand out a few tips on how to make your evening party celebration crackle & fizz on your wedding day! Choose a venue where the main dance floor area and DJ are close to the bar. Separate rooms and lengthy divides make it really difficult to maintain a crowd in one place. If you’re handing over an extensive playlist to your DJ, you’ve booked the wrong one. Have confidence in the DJ you’ve hired…let them use their own experience to read the

Shiny & New!

Monday morning again…hello! January & February are ordinarily quiet months in a DJ’s calendar, and a good time to service the equipment for the year ahead. It’s also a very tempting time to buy new kit too! We’re no different from your partner who looks longingly through hi-fi magazines and ads, craving the latest technology and funky new TVs! Well, as all of my lighting is very contemporary and mostly under three years old, there’s little need to replace anything this year…but…since when has it been about need?! This weekend, I invested in probably the oldest lighting effect of all,

From Locking Down to Looking Up – The Green Shoots of Normality!

Happy New Year everyone! Yeah, I know it’s a bit late, being the middle of January an’ all that, but here we are! DJs, singers and hospitality workers emerging into the light like Spring flowers after soooo long in the darkness of the Covid epidemic…finally we are seeing confidence return in having wedding receptions, birthday parties and just about every other celebration without the fear of being cancelled or outlawed! So…what does this year have in store for me? Well, there’s a few wedding reception postponements for starters, some that have moved their date five times! And the phone and

Please…trust me, I’m a professional DJ!

Please indulge me if you will for a few moments… Imagine yourself in your regular workplace or doing what you’ve done for a living for years and years. You’ve built up a comprehensive understanding of the job, you know all the short-cuts, all the possible issues and the outcomes. You’re about as qualified as it gets doing the job you’re in….ok so far? Now imagine what it would be like if someone new comes in and tells you exactly how to do the job, but they have no experience of the work and only a rudimentary understanding of what you

Back To The Barn!

Last night saw the very long-awaited return to one of my personal favourite venues, Smeetham Hall Barn in Suffolk. The barn is a great place for a wedding reception…big open space for the DJ and dance floor, bar in the same room (essential!) and the very rare luxury of being able to use my haze machine to accentuate the lighting! There’s a beautiful lake right outside the entrance which makes for some stunning wedding photography too. And my return was made that much better by being greeted with a cup of tea from the lovely bar staff! Cant wait to
