I won’t be going back there again……DJ’s worst nightmare Vol.1

Last night, I had the rather unfortunate task of playing a gig at possibly the lowest volume levels I have ever experienced in my 25-year career. Picture the scene…..a large and very well-presented marquee in the grounds of Shenley Cricket Club in Herts…..almost two hundred guests in very good spirits…….fabulously helpful and friendly staff….a dream scenario for any DJ. Until they introduced me to their sound-limiting system…… Unlike other sound monitoring technology which simply cuts the power if you get too loud, this one had the ability to reduce the levels directly fed to my speakers, thus preventing any total silence

Westside Studio – Our favourite photographers!

On Tuesday, we spent the most wonderful day in the company of Paul & Lisa, at Westside Studio in North Benfleet. Taking a wonderful wedding vocalist along for her first ever photoshoot, there were obviously signs of nerves but right from the start Paul put her at ease with his laid-back and professional manner. He took time to recommend loads of different poses and wardrobe adjustments, together with a real enthusiasm for the finished products. Needless to say, the vocalist was absolutely delighted with the results, finding it difficult to select a final 36 images from the 100 taken on the day! Many other pictures on

Merry Christmas & A Very Happy New Year to you all

To all the fabulous couples who’ve let us share their biggest day in 2011, to all the contestants of our many quiz nights, to all the people who’ve partied hard at our functions and to the wonderful venue staff who’ve helped us along the way (you know who you are!) we wish you the best Christmas ever and an even more wonderful New Year.

You don’t get out much, do you?

Right in the middle of a glut of Christmas parties and corporate knees-ups, I feel compelled to blog about some recent events…..namely the narrow-mindedness of some party goers over the age of fifty! It seems to me that a lot of people born before 1960 don’t appear to have been out of the house since 1979, turned on a radio or even given airtime to any music created from the 80’s onwards. Case in point was a ‘party’ I DJ’d at last night. Small intimate venue, dinner dance, more mature crowd. I really struggled to get any signs of life

De La Soul – Kings of Hip Hop triumphant return to London!

Oh, what a fabulous night on Sunday! The indigO2 club packed in anticipation for the one-night-only return of De La Soul…and they did not disappoint! The place erupted for such gems as Me, Myself & I and Ring Ring Hey Hey. They certainly worked the crowd well, the old magic still evident despite the passing years. I last saw these guys back in the late nineties at The Forum (I think!) but I never dreamed that I’d one day share their stage for an awesome return to form. I had the simple job of playing my favourite old skool hip

The big confusing world of mobile DJ choice….

I was reminded of two very important things recently in connection with our business of mobile DJing…. First one was all to do with perception. I paid a passing visit to a DJ with whom I was playing at the same venue on the same night, albeit in different function suites. I’d previously seen this guy’s website and upon briefly looking it over, he appeared to be very neat and tidy, with good equipment and presentation skills. In the flesh however, things were very different. The whole set up looked haphazard, dangerous even, and most of his components were sadly

The First Dance – Your Last Wedding Day Formality!

Covering the hundreds of weddings per year that we do, it’s still surprising to me that the choices for the traditional First Dance hardly vary at all despite the wealth of music available. Listed below are our Top 5 most requested First Dances from the last five years: I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing – Aerosmith Amazed – Lonestar Have I Told You Lately – Van Morrison / Rod Stewart First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack / Leona Lewis / Stereophonics At Last – Etta James Blockbuster Hollywood movies are often a big influence in many

Cash Converters – You Steal it, They’ll Deal It!

It’s almost a year ago since we suffered a massive blow to our business, when over £4000-worth of equipment and music was stolen from a venue at which we were playing. Whilst our DJ was tying stuff in the van, some unscrupulous low-lifes boldly strode into the hall through a side door and made off with speakers, lights, microphones, music and hundreds of essential cables. It was a devastating feeling, especially knowing that the idiotic venue staff had watched it all happen in front of them and done nothing. After reporting it to the police (and getting that ‘why did

The Lawn, Rochford

As part of our wedding reception venue reviews, we come to an old favourite of ours, The Lawn in Rochford, Essex. Considering the size of the building, the room in which the DJ sets up system is remarkably small. Best to utilise your smallest sound system and no need for dozens of lights. Access is fairly easy for unloading equipment and the staff are always helpful in clearing doorways, etc. to assist you. The bar is in a separate area but the music can still be heard from there. Being a Georgian country house, the surroundings are very ornate and
